Cleantech investing is hot - but will it last?

In Australia, the Cleantech Sector is reaching new heights, both for established and listed companies and early-stage ventures.

The Deloitte Australian CleanTech Index, a quarterly review of 90 ASX clean-tech stocks, soared 11 per cent in the June 2021 quarter. The index has climbed a cumulative 85 per cent in the five years. The index’s 20 largest stocks have outperformed the Australian sharemarket for seven years in a row. This demonstrates a comprehensive and positive picture of the Australian cleantech sector backed by a strong long-term performance.

Over the last five to ten years, a vibrant early-stage innovation scene has evolved too globally, and the trend is especially strong in the EU. According to the Cleantech for Europe report, venture capital invested in EU startups increased by 7.5 times over the period from 2011 to 2020, and EU cleantech startups attracted almost 23% of global seed funding in 2020.

Join us on October 21st to learn more about investing trends in Cleantech.

  • What underlying trends and changes are driving this growth?
  • Can we fear a "bubble" or will growth last in this sector?
  • Is the Australian Cleantech VC sector as strong as it could be?
  • What opportunities exist in Australia to invest in early-stage cleantech?
  • Hydrogen, Energy Efficiency, Energy Storage...The Cleantech sector is broad. Are there some specific sub-sectors of Cleatech worth paying more attention to?

To dive into this topic with nuance and insights, we have the pleasure to welcome one Cleantech Investment expert and one successful cleantech entrepreneur:

Iain Stewart - Founder and CEO of Exergenics

Iain Stewart is the founder of Exergenics, a cleantech company creating software that reduces the energy costs and environmental impacts of commercial air conditioning and refrigeration systems.

While working as an Energy Engineer, Iain witnessed firsthand how inefficient the controls of central cooling plants can be, wasting electricity, increasing peak demand and leading to higher emissions. He then set out to build software that could integrate into any commercial building and optimise cooling equipment.

‍Exergenics raised over $1m in seed funding, and participated in the EnergyLab & Melbourne Accelerator Programs. In 2020, Iain was named one of Australia's Most Innovative Engineers by Engineers Australia and named on the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia list.
